Rabbit in the head lights

What in the world is the UK parliament doing?

I mean we could sit here and argue that it is doing ‘democracy’ but I would beg to differ.

A quick glance at Wikipedia yields the following stripped back definition “control of an organisation or group by the majority of its members”. I see little evidence recently that the majority as defined by both the EU referendum and the last election are really being listened to.

What you have actually seen is parliament and government in a state of paralysis driven largely by them both wanting to do everything except deliver on the EU referendum.

If as I have said earlier (Link), they were so confident that the outcome of leaving the EU was going to so bad and bring the country to the edge of destruction why have they not pulled the plug and revoked? That is the natural end point of that line of thinking. If you were that sure it would be a no brainer.

I mean I wouldn’t mind if they were honest, but they aren’t.

They won’t be honest about what they really want to do as pathetically they are more worried about their jobs. I mean they are desperate to revoke but won't say it as the electorate might turf them out.

What an indictment of a political class - timid, weak and lacking in even basic principles.

So instead we see the Government, Commons, Lords and now even the Speaker doing everything they can to dismember, slowdown and finally stop the UK from leaving the EU as requested by the population in the 2016 referendum.

Everything that has happened – everything - is about trying to stop it but not being seen to stop it.

Even the government which has sat there for two years and said that hell or high water we were leaving on the 29th March 2019 bottled it in the end. I mean they said it was about Northern Ireland, but no one really believes that – in the end they could not bring themselves to be the ones to pull the trigger and actually leave.

I mean the latest wheeze has been to get the EU to extend to October (or any time). I mean why anyone thinks that this will change anything is beyond me. Let’s be honest the facts won’t change and unless we have an election neither will the parliamentary arithmetic. So, in fact all it has done is provide space for more delay and more time for hopefully the UK population to change its mind!

Let’s be honest that is what they all desperately hope for as it would let them off the hook.

The current situation is thus -

The British parliament has said that the Withdrawal agreement is bad and won’t vote for it whilst complaining that it’s a ‘blind’ Brexit. This of course ignores the fact that is the nature of Article 50. The EU has said that the Withdrawal agreement must be signed before any talks about the future can commence. They are of course happy to amend the political declaration which has little legal value and can’t settle the future relationship as that is down to the negotiations and so it might not even be possible.

Genius.

Beyond that with true comedic effect parliament voted on various ideas for the future relationship in the farce that was the indicative votes and managed to vote against all of them. So clearly, they know exactly what they want!

Everyone is arguing over something whilst no one knows what it should look like and in the next 3 – 5 years will likely change as reality dawns on all sides.

On top of that parliament has voted to take no deal off the table. I mean they safely ignored the fact that they can’t take no deal off the table beyond revoking Article 50 or accepting the Withdrawal agreement. That didn’t stop Cooper et al virtue signalling, wasting parliamentary time and even getting the Queen out of bed to legislate an extension to Article 50 which the PM had already said she would request and which again was down to the EU to accept or not.

What a waste of time but you know it made for good social media and Cooper can look great in preparation for that leadership bid!

Sorry Yvette you haven’t a hope in hell but carry on.

So pathetically parliament has managed to rule out No deal, the withdrawal agreement and revoking.

I mean they are trying to put together some sort of cut and shut deal on the Political declaration in talks between Labour and the Conservatives. This of course could even be passed into law to try and make it something that might outlast the government. Sadly the bright sparks in parliament obviously don’t grasp or are safely ignoring constitution 101 about no parliament binding any successor.

Yes they could just repeal it.

So we head on but really the problem is constitutional now and it flows like this.
  1. Cabinet has no confidence in the Prime Minister but hasn’t got guts to bring her down
  2. Conservative party has no confidence in the PM or the cabinet but hasn’t got the guts to end it
  3. Parliament thinks the government is grossly incompetent but is so scared for their own jobs they won’t bring the government down
  4. The British people because of the above has no ability to hold the lot of them accountable for the complete botch that they are making of the whole process
So instead you can hear the whispers about a referendum which is the very last thing the country needs. But beyond that will have no democratic legitimacy as I blogged about.

But politicians from all sides want it now as means that hopefully the electorate will change their mind or at least take the final responsibility.

In the end our political class are just scared lambs who want to keep their jobs.

What a bunch of undemocratic cowards.
